On The Road Again...

A Long Dangerous Drive

This is it, the day I decide we will drive along the Atlantic coast the entire length of the island. Tobago is on 26 miles long and from Crown Point were we’re staying to Charlottesville should only take about an hour. That’s a laugh. The roads twist and turn, are narrow, rutted and non existent in a couple of places. They climb up steeply and plunge down the other side just as fast. In a couple of places, they were one lane wide around a blind curve. All in all, it was quite an adventure. I had to watch both sides of the road, look for photo opportunities and give Carl enough warning for him to safely pull over. There were many instances where I would see something to photograph after we were way by it so I tried to make note of the area for the trip back. We traveled through Scarborough along the ocean’s edge where the road was protected from the pounding by a sturdy concrete wall. When we arrived in Speyside, the Atlantic ocean was free to run wild through the streets and I could see erosive evidence of just such an instance. The big draw in Speyside was a restaurant called Jemma’s but we missed it on the way up. Come to think of it, we missed it on the way back, too so we stopped at a place called the Birdwatchers. The food was good, the breeze was refreshing and the cost was more than reasonable. Among our stops was a gray sand beach and an old sugar mill. We had a great day. Our “last meal” was free rum punch and a BBQ at Poolside. We returned to our villa to pack and it was suddenly pouring out. It rained hard for most of the night. The locals will be happy to have it.

The Greening Of ..., Well, Everything!

I just had to get out of the house this afternoon. The sun was coming through the windows so strongly, I felt compelled to grab my camera and go take pictures. It was a shock to find out the sunshine was not as strong as it seemed. And the wind was no gentle fan either. Anyway, I started at one corner of my yard and wandered about for a worthwhile subject to "focus" on. Imagine my surprise when I realized the weeds are actually much more advanced in my husband's gardens than any of the spring blossoms he has placed there. Over in one corner of the yard is a healthy patch of dandelion greens, in another a rather large lambs tongue has popped through the surface. The leaves on the wild berry brambles are looking fine and even the Poplar trees are sending off their first seed strands. The slope of weed filled expanse we call a lawn is fairly thick, with all sorts of wild grasses, some of which, you might even consider actual grass. In all of this observation, I found just this, a couple of lonely little grape hyacinths and a rather sparsely blooming forsythia bush which is probably older than my grandson. The grandson is doing better, trust me. No where could I find my beautiful tulips, or the countless daffodils, paper narcissus and lily of the valley. Everywhere I looked, the yard was green and even though all those long winter months I longed for things to be green, now I wish for there to be other colors, lots of brilliant reds, blues, yellows, pinks, and purples. All this proves is two things. We, as humans, are never satisfied and always want more than we have and the last is that we are never happy with just sitting back and living in the moment. I know this because here I am finally ready to sit back and smell the roses and there isn't a single blooming rose out there..... YET!

Never Too Early Or Am I Crazy?

This year, for the first time ever, I'll be doing a craft fair in February. Thankfully, it will be an inside event. The Littleton, NH Senior Center is sponsoring the 1st Annual Cabin Fever Flea Market and Craft Fair on February 20th from 9:00AM to 12:00PM. Call me crazy but I think, with enough publicity, this could be a really good thing. By that time in the month, most of us who don't have a passion for snowmobiling or skiing, are crawling up the walls. We long for something green to burst from a tree branch, the ground or even a window box. Some of us even go to great lengths to get things to bloom like forcing spring bulbs in inside gardens. I hope many of you will come visit me at the Senior Center which is just off Cottage Street on the 20th. Please don't make me regret my decision!!

Ready, Set, Go!

or that's the way I should feel at this time of year. What has traditionally happened to me the past few years is that I push myself during October, November and December. Then, January rolls around and I end up sick. Followers of this blog can attest to my previous posts on the subject. Well, here we are on January 21st and guess what? I'm not sick! In fact, there was no real push for the end of the year because, let's face it, everyone knows the economy sucks, right? I'm also here to tell you that unless you want a whole media card full of winter shots with lots of snow, there isn't much happening in the photography department either. Anyone who lives in New Hampshire and the north country, in particular, wakes up every morning to a couple inches of fluff on their vehicles. In our family, we call it something else with one less letter. I've charged my batteries, cleaned my lens and filters, re-formatted all of my media cards and I've even played a little with my new tripod. I'm ready! Now, if the weather would cooperate with a little sunshine after a snowstorm instead of this constant gloomy overcast condition, I'd be wicked happy. I can tell you that my phone is ringing with inquiries, a special order from Florida, a request for an appearance at a winter yard sale/craft event and an order from my daughter to help a 5th grader from Washington state with her search for all things New Hampshire. Things are beginning to look up and so are my spirits.
